{"id":11031,"date":"2007-09-25T11:16:34","date_gmt":"2007-09-25T11:16:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ufcw.org\/2007\/09\/25\/farm-bill-provision-will-put-consumers-and-food-workers-at-risk\/"},"modified":"2020-08-24T19:12:33","modified_gmt":"2020-08-24T19:12:33","slug":"farm-bill-provision-will-put-consumers-and-food-workers-at-risk","status":"publish","type":"press_releases","link":"https:\/\/www.ufcw.org\/press-releases\/farm-bill-provision-will-put-consumers-and-food-workers-at-risk\/","title":{"rendered":"FARM BILL PROVISION WILL PUT CONSUMERS AND FOOD WORKERS AT RISK"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span><strong><em>Provision will compromise food safety by allowing states to forgo federal meat and poultry inspections<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Washington, D.C. \u2013 The United Food and Commercial Workers International Union (UFCW) joined forces with the American Federation of Government Employees today to oppose a provision in the House Farm Bill that will put consumers at risk of food borne illnesses and further subject food workers to unsanitary work conditions.<\/p>\n<p>The provision will eliminate a 40-year-old protection in the federal meat and poultry inspection acts that bans state inspected meat and poultry from being sold in interstate commerce.\u00a0 The provision will also allow the vast majority of meat and poultry plants to forgo federal inspection in favor of more lax state inspections, which ultimately puts the health and safety of millions of consumers at risk.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis amendment will weaken America\u2019s food safety net, pure and simple,\u201d said Michael J.
