Fair scheduling and paid time off are what makes that happen and is another thing we fight for on behalf of our members.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"tw-max-w-217 tw-m-auto tw-px-6 rich-text contained-block\" data-module=\"heading\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">When you\u2019re a member of a union, your contract protects you when you need leave or time off. <\/h3>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"tw-max-w-217 tw-m-auto tw-px-6 rich-text contained-block\" data-module=\"paragraph\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Having a union contract means that when you\u2019re sick, you can stay home without penalty or that you are able to take days off for that family vacation. A contract also means more reliable schedules so that you can plan your life outside of work.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"tw-max-w-217 tw-m-auto tw-px-6 rich-text contained-block\" data-module=\"embed\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Dalton Nixon (Local 617)\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/wDW8UmeqRa0?feature=oembed&#038;enablejsapi=1&#038;origin=https:\/\/www.ufcw.org\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"tw-max-w-217 tw-m-auto tw-px-6 rich-text contained-block\" data-module=\"heading\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Eliminating last-minute scheduling<\/strong><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"tw-max-w-217 tw-m-auto tw-px-6 rich-text contained-block\" data-module=\"paragraph\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Too many workers are subject to &#8220;just-in-time&#8221; and &#8220;on-call&#8221; scheduling, which provide no stability and no ability to plan time away from the job. That&#8217;s why we support legislation such as the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/118th-congress\/house-bill\/5563\/text\">Schedules That Work Act<\/a><\/strong> and the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/119th-congress\/house-bill\/6818\">Part-Time Worker Bill of Rights Act<\/a><\/strong> that would require employers to develop fair scheduling processes, including advance notice of any changes and, for large employers, a mandate to offer available hours to current employees before hiring new employees or subcontractors.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"tw-max-w-217 tw-m-auto tw-px-6 rich-text contained-block\" data-module=\"heading\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Protecting healthcare workers from mandatory overtime<\/strong><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"tw-max-w-217 tw-m-auto tw-px-6 rich-text contained-block\" data-module=\"paragraph\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mandatory overtime is an unsafe and exploitative practice that forces healthcare workers to work extra hours beyond their scheduled shift, which is bad for workers and patients alike. To protect <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ufcw.org\/who-we-represent\/healthcare\/\">healthcare workers<\/a> and patients, we encourage policymakers to pass legislation outlawing mandatory overtime in the healthcare industry, ensuring that accepting overtime is voluntary and that a worker&#8217;s refusal to accept overtime is not grounds for discrimination, dismissal, discharge, or any other employment penalty.<\/p>\n<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Unchecked automation can harm workers and consumers.
