Union Victory for Food Delivery Workers Comes As Companies Push to Exploit Prop. 22 and Weaken Protections for Essential Frontline Workers<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n

HAYWARD, CA —<\/strong> Today, the United Food and Commercial Workers Local 5<\/strong><\/a>, which represents 30,000 food and retail workers<\/strong> across the Bay Area, announced a major victory for nearly 100 food delivery workers unionizing<\/strong> at Imperfect Foods<\/a>, a tech-driven grocery startup based in San Francisco that delivers surplus or \u201cimperfect\u201d produce and other food products directly to consumers in states across the country. Imperfect Foods just announced $110 million in a new funding round<\/a>, with the company now valued at $700 million<\/a> after its 2015 launch.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n

Imperfect Foods workers joining UFCW Local 5<\/strong> comes after a recent union victory for Bay Area 250 Safeway grocery delivery drivers<\/strong> who became the first food delivery workers at the top grocery chain to unionize<\/a>. UFCW has been a leading national voice for food delivery and gig economy workers, helping Instacart workers unionize for the first time in company history<\/a> in February 2020. In the wake of Prop. 22, UFCW is holding gig economy and food delivery companies accountable<\/strong> and continuing the push to protect essential food delivery workers who are serving as a critical lifeline, protecting food access for those who are high-risk or quarantining as the COVID-19 pandemic continues.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n

BACKGROUND<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n

UFCW Local 5 <\/strong>announced today that more than 80 food delivery workers at Imperfect Foods voted to join the union<\/strong>. The campaign to unionize Imperfect Foods workers began in July 2020, and these workers voted to join UFCW Local 5 to strengthen pay, increase access to healthcare<\/strong>, and improve health and safety protections <\/strong>as they continue to serve as frontline workers<\/strong> and face higher incidences of injuries amid a spike in food delivery demand during the pandemic.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n

\n

Imperfect Foods attempted to stop workers from unionizing<\/strong> by hiring a union-busting consultant and held daily 2-hour mandatory meetings for two straight weeks in an attempt to intimidate and pressure workers against exercising their right to unionize with UFCW Local 5. Imperfect Foods threatened to outsource the jobs of these workers to contractors and changed people\u2019s shifts to disrupt the campaign. Additionally, the company promised raises and promotions to workers who voted against unionizing.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n

In January 2021<\/strong>, UFCW Local 5 announced a union victory for 250 Safeway grocery delivery drivers<\/strong> who became the first food delivery workers at the top grocery chain to unionize<\/a>. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n
