{"id":51157,"date":"2023-01-05T20:51:30","date_gmt":"2023-01-05T20:51:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ufcw.org\/?post_type=victories&#038;p=51157"},"modified":"2023-01-05T20:51:31","modified_gmt":"2023-01-05T20:51:31","slug":"cvs-workers-in-california-ratify-first-contract","status":"publish","type":"victories","link":"https:\/\/www.ufcw.org\/actions\/victories\/cvs-workers-in-california-ratify-first-contract\/","title":{"rendered":"CVS Workers in California Ratify First Contract"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"tw-max-w-217 tw-m-auto tw-px-6 rich-text contained-block\" data-module=\"paragraph\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Members of UFCW Local 5 who work at CVS store number 9554 in San Mateo, Calif., recently ratified a first contract that provides better wages and a voice in the workplace.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"tw-max-w-217 tw-m-auto tw-px-6 rich-text contained-block\" data-module=\"paragraph\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The ratification took place nearly one year after UFCW Local 5 was certified by the National Labor Relations Board as the bargaining representative of the store\u2019s 15 workers after&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/forlocals.ufcw.org\/2022\/01\/05\/cvs-workers-in-california-join-local-5\/\">they voted in favor of union representation<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"tw-max-w-217 tw-m-auto tw-px-6 rich-text contained-block\" data-module=\"paragraph\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For many of the employees at the store, the wait for union representation was even longer.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"tw-max-w-217 tw-m-auto tw-px-6 rich-text contained-block\" data-module=\"paragraph\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe wanted the union when workers at all CVS stores in the Bay Area had the opportunity to join Local 5 several years ago, but our store missed out by one vote,\u201d said Bonnie Armanino who has been with CVS for 23 years and is a new Shop Steward. \u201cThis time we were on a mission, we kept everybody together, didn\u2019t get discouraged and finally got the contract that we deserve.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"tw-max-w-217 tw-m-auto tw-px-6 rich-text contained-block\" data-module=\"paragraph\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While the most compelling issue was rates of pay according to Armanino, job security was at stake as well. When a 30-year employee at the store was fired for a minor violation of company policy, UFCW Local 5 representatives took on her case and even though a contract was not yet in place, and successfully got her reinstated to her former position.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"tw-max-w-217 tw-m-auto tw-px-6 rich-text contained-block\" data-module=\"paragraph\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat was a great example of what union representation means to us,\u201d Armanino added. \u201cNow we have this protection and job security in writing which is so important with a major company like CVS.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"tw-max-w-217 tw-m-auto tw-px-6 rich-text contained-block\" data-module=\"paragraph\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These new members join their colleagues at more than 75 of the company\u2019s stores throughout the Bay Area that have unionized with UFCW Local 5.
