{"id":61066,"date":"2025-01-13T16:36:26","date_gmt":"2025-01-13T16:36:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ufcw.org\/?post_type=press_releases&#038;p=61066"},"modified":"2025-01-13T16:36:27","modified_gmt":"2025-01-13T16:36:27","slug":"ufcw-responds-to-usda-studies","status":"publish","type":"press_releases","link":"https:\/\/www.ufcw.org\/press-releases\/ufcw-responds-to-usda-studies\/","title":{"rendered":"UFCW Responds to USDA Studies Showing Risk of Poultry and Swine Line Speeds"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"tw-max-w-217 tw-m-auto tw-px-6 rich-text contained-block\" data-module=\"heading\">\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u201c<em>We must take stronger action to protect these workers and ensure the safety of our food supply chain.\u201d<\/em><\/h5>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"tw-max-w-217 tw-m-auto tw-px-6 rich-text contained-block\" data-module=\"paragraph\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>WASHINGTON, DC<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013 Today, the United Food and Commercial Workers International Union (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ufcw.org\/\">UFCW<\/a>), which represents 1.2 million workers in meatpacking, food processing, grocery, retail, and other essential industries across North America, released a statement in response to the USDA releasing two studies on the impact of line speeds on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fsis.usda.gov\/news-events\/publications\/poultry-processing-line-speed-evaluation-study-pulse\">poultry<\/a>&nbsp;and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fsis.usda.gov\/news-events\/publications\/swine-processing-line-speed-evaluation-study-pulse\">swine<\/a>&nbsp;workers.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"tw-max-w-217 tw-m-auto tw-px-6 rich-text contained-block\" data-module=\"paragraph\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>UFCW International President Marc Perrone said:<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"tw-max-w-217 tw-m-auto tw-px-6 rich-text contained-block\" data-module=\"quote\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><div class=\"tw-max-w-217 tw-m-auto tw-px-6 rich-text contained-block\" data-module=\"paragraph\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOur members work tirelessly every day in America\u2019s pork and poultry plants, helping families put food on the table. We have always understood that these jobs are not just essential, they are dangerous, and they are difficult.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"tw-max-w-217 tw-m-auto tw-px-6 rich-text contained-block\" data-module=\"paragraph\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThese USDA studies reaffirm what we have long known \u2013 that poultry and swine slaughter poses serious risk to workers, regardless of line speed. We must take stronger action to protect these workers and ensure the safety of our food supply chain.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"tw-max-w-217 tw-m-auto tw-px-6 rich-text contained-block\" data-module=\"paragraph\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe UFCW is calling for a full range of safety measures including additional staffing, improved reporting of workplace injuries, expanded access to early and adequate medical treatment, and job modifications that minimize ergonomic stressors.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"tw-max-w-217 tw-m-auto tw-px-6 rich-text contained-block\" data-module=\"paragraph\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cEmployers and government officials must recognize the direct link between worker safety and the safety of our food.
