{"id":61804,"date":"2025-04-09T14:54:05","date_gmt":"2025-04-09T14:54:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ufcw.org\/?post_type=victories&#038;p=61804"},"modified":"2025-04-09T14:54:06","modified_gmt":"2025-04-09T14:54:06","slug":"barnes-noble-workers-in-illinois-ratify-first-contract","status":"publish","type":"victories","link":"https:\/\/www.ufcw.org\/actions\/victories\/barnes-noble-workers-in-illinois-ratify-first-contract\/","title":{"rendered":"Barnes &amp; Noble Workers in Illinois Ratify First Contract"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"tw-max-w-217 tw-m-auto tw-px-6 rich-text contained-block\" data-module=\"paragraph\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On March 8, RWDSU\/UFCW members who work at the Barnes &amp; Noble store in Bloomington, Ill., ratified their first union contract.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"tw-max-w-217 tw-m-auto tw-px-6 rich-text contained-block\" data-module=\"paragraph\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition to increased wages and the added general protections, the three-year contract includes the following provisions:<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"tw-max-w-217 tw-m-auto tw-px-6 rich-text contained-block\" data-module=\"list\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><div class=\"tw-max-w-217 tw-m-auto tw-px-6 rich-text contained-block\" data-module=\"list-item\">\n<li><strong>RWDSU Health Care<\/strong>: union health care coverage.<\/li>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"tw-max-w-217 tw-m-auto tw-px-6 rich-text contained-block\" data-module=\"list-item\">\n<li><strong>Safety Equipment<\/strong>: back braces, wrist guards, anti-slip mats for the cafe area, stools for workers to sit at every information desk and cash register, and on the sales floor, booksellers and baristas will be allowed to sit to get relief when needed.<\/li>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"tw-max-w-217 tw-m-auto tw-px-6 rich-text contained-block\" data-module=\"list-item\">\n<li><strong>Safety Language<\/strong>: that protects the workers, including a safety committee, de-escalation trainings, the ability to walk away from unsafe situations without fear of reprisal, and a clear process for banning customers who harass or behave inappropriately towards workers.<\/li>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"tw-max-w-217 tw-m-auto tw-px-6 rich-text contained-block\" data-module=\"list-item\">\n<li><strong>Job Security<\/strong>: if the store closes and relocates elsewhere.<\/li>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"tw-max-w-217 tw-m-auto tw-px-6 rich-text contained-block\" data-module=\"list-item\">\n<li><strong>Pay Security<\/strong>: for store emergency closing situations.<\/li>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"tw-max-w-217 tw-m-auto tw-px-6 rich-text contained-block\" data-module=\"list-item\">\n<li><strong>New Trainings<\/strong>: annual anti-discrimination and other trainings.<\/li>\n<\/div><\/ul>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"tw-max-w-217 tw-m-auto tw-px-6 rich-text contained-block\" data-module=\"paragraph\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s been a long difficult year of negotiations and while we had to make a lot of compromises on both sides, in the end our first contract is a win for our booksellers and baristas,\u201d said Zane Crockett (he\/him), who is a lead bookseller at the Bloomington Barnes &amp; Noble store. \u201cWe now have stools at the registers, locked in raises and increased rates of pay for positions for three years, and an excellent health care package through the RWDSU for our booksellers and baristas that we are very excited about. We hope we\u2019ve paved the way for other stores now that several locations in the country have reached a contract agreement with Barnes &amp; Noble.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"tw-max-w-217 tw-m-auto tw-px-6 rich-text contained-block\" data-module=\"paragraph\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWorkers at Barnes &amp; Noble should be incredibly proud of what they\u2019ve accomplished together in these historic first union contracts from Illinois to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/forlocals.ufcw.org\/2025\/03\/24\/barnes-noble-workers-in-new-york-ratify-first-union-contracts\/?link_id=4&amp;can_id=1e22e8abdfd04b687919b32c14766d3d&amp;source=email-onpoint-newsletter-3192025&amp;email_referrer=email_2668013&amp;email_subject=onpoint-newsletter-3252025\">New York<\/a>,\u201d said RWDSU President Stuart Appelbaum (he\/him). \u201cUnited in their fight for increased safety in their stores, it was their voices across the table that won. Now, we can finally say their longtime safety needs are codified in union contracts, which also include industry standard setting wage increases, union health care, and more. A union is the only way to ensure workplace protections are secure \u2013 especially now, while laws protecting workers are under attack.
