{"id":62203,"date":"2025-07-03T14:06:44","date_gmt":"2025-07-03T14:06:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ufcw.org\/?post_type=press_releases&#038;p=62203"},"modified":"2025-07-07T14:16:27","modified_gmt":"2025-07-07T14:16:27","slug":"ufcw-condemns-passage-of-republican-reconciliation-bill","status":"publish","type":"press_releases","link":"https:\/\/www.ufcw.org\/press-releases\/ufcw-condemns-passage-of-republican-reconciliation-bill\/","title":{"rendered":"UFCW Condemns Passage of Republican Reconciliation Bill"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"tw-max-w-217 tw-m-auto tw-px-6 rich-text contained-block\" data-module=\"paragraph\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>WASHINGTON, D.C.<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013 Today, the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ufcw.org\/about\/\"> <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ufcw.org\/about\/\">United Food and Commercial Workers International Union (UFCW)<\/a>, America\u2019s largest private sector union representing 1.2 million workers in meatpacking, food processing, grocery, retail, and other essential industries across North America, released a statement in response to passage of the \u201cOne Big Beautiful Bill Act.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"tw-max-w-217 tw-m-auto tw-px-6 rich-text contained-block\" data-module=\"paragraph\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>UFCW International President Milton Jones said:&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"tw-max-w-217 tw-m-auto tw-px-6 rich-text contained-block\" data-module=\"quote\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><div class=\"tw-max-w-217 tw-m-auto tw-px-6 rich-text contained-block\" data-module=\"paragraph\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe UFCW is deeply disappointed that Congress passed this damaging, ugly bill that ignores the needs of working families and makes cuts that are not just cruel \u2013 they are economically reckless.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"tw-max-w-217 tw-m-auto tw-px-6 rich-text contained-block\" data-module=\"paragraph\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBoth Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and Medicaid do much more than help families make ends meet. These programs support union jobs in grocery stores, meatpacking plants, and health care facilities across the country.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"tw-max-w-217 tw-m-auto tw-px-6 rich-text contained-block\" data-module=\"paragraph\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201c80 percent of SNAP dollars are spent at traditional grocery stores where our members work and feed their communities. When families lose access to food assistance, grocery sales drop. That means fewer hours, fewer jobs, and more strain on workers all along the food supply chain, including meatpacking and food processing workers. Rural communities that rely on meatpacking and food processing jobs will be devastated.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"tw-max-w-217 tw-m-auto tw-px-6 rich-text contained-block\" data-module=\"paragraph\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSimilarly, UFCW members working in hospitals, nursing homes, and health care facilities depend on Medicaid funding to care for patients and keep their doors open. These cuts will lead to more layoffs, more burnout, and fewer staff to care for those in need.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"tw-max-w-217 tw-m-auto tw-px-6 rich-text contained-block\" data-module=\"paragraph\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis bill delivers real harm to working people, all while extending tax breaks for the wealthy. UFCW members keep this country fed, healthy, and running.
