Labour Relations Board officially certified their union under UFCW Canada. This marks the first-ever union certification for Uber drivers in Canada, setting a precedent for other gig workers across the country.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"tw-max-w-217 tw-m-auto tw-px-6 rich-text contained-block\" data-module=\"paragraph\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The drivers\u2019 campaign focused on securing core workplace protections\u2014such as improved health and safety measures, transparency in the app\u2019s rating system, and fair processes for account deactivations. With certification secured, Victoria Uber drivers can now move forward to negotiate the first of its kind collective agreement.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"tw-max-w-217 tw-m-auto tw-px-6 rich-text contained-block\" data-module=\"paragraph\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis is a defining moment for the labour movement in Canada,\u201d said <strong>UFCW International Secretary-Treasurer Shawn Haggerty<\/strong>. \u201cThe certification of Uber drivers in Victoria shows that workers in every sector\u2014even in the platform economy\u2014can organize and win. These drivers are setting a national precedent, and UFCW Canada is committed to supporting them every step of the way as they work toward a strong, fair first agreement.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"tw-max-w-217 tw-m-auto tw-px-6 rich-text contained-block\" data-module=\"paragraph\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis certification is a powerful reminder that platform workers are not alone\u2014they have the right to organize, to be heard, and to fight for fairness,\u201d said <strong>UFCW Canada Director of Emerging Sectors Pablo Godoy<\/strong>. \u201cCertification means drivers will now have a formal seat at the table to shape their work and build lasting protections in the platform economy.
