{"id":63783,"date":"2025-12-18T15:21:24","date_gmt":"2025-12-18T20:21:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ufcw.org\/?post_type=press_releases&#038;p=63783"},"modified":"2025-12-18T15:21:25","modified_gmt":"2025-12-18T20:21:25","slug":"cannabis-reclassifying","status":"publish","type":"press_releases","link":"https:\/\/www.ufcw.org\/press-releases\/cannabis-reclassifying\/","title":{"rendered":"UFCW Warns Reclassifying Cannabis to a Schedule III Drug Not Enough for Workers"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"tw-max-w-217 tw-m-auto tw-px-6 rich-text contained-block\" data-module=\"paragraph\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>WASHINGTON \u2013 <\/strong>Today, the <strong><u><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ufcw.org\/about\">United Food and Commercial Workers International Union (UFCW)<\/a><\/u><\/strong>, which represents 1.2 million essential workers across North America, including thousands of workers in the cannabis industry, released a statement in response to the Trump Administration\u2019s plan to reclassify cannabis from a Schedule I to a Schedule III drug.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"tw-max-w-217 tw-m-auto tw-px-6 rich-text contained-block\" data-module=\"paragraph\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>UFCW International President Milton Jones<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>said:<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"tw-max-w-217 tw-m-auto tw-px-6 rich-text contained-block\" data-module=\"quote\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><div class=\"tw-max-w-217 tw-m-auto tw-px-6 rich-text contained-block\" data-module=\"paragraph\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe Administration\u2019s plan to reclassify cannabis amounts to a tax giveaway for cannabis business owners without any protections for the workers who power this industry.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"tw-max-w-217 tw-m-auto tw-px-6 rich-text contained-block\" data-module=\"paragraph\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSimilar to the Biden Administration\u2019s plan, this effort risks creating an industry that reinforces the inequities present throughout our economy. Hundreds of thousands of cannabis workers will still face the same challenges that they do now, including the lack of access to proper job training and health and safety protections.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"tw-max-w-217 tw-m-auto tw-px-6 rich-text contained-block\" data-module=\"paragraph\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cReclassifying cannabis from a Schedule I to Schedule III drug ignores the needs of workers and wastes the chance to finally deliver justice for the families impacted by the War on Drugs.
