{"id":63974,"date":"2026-01-27T17:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-01-27T22:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ufcw.org\/?post_type=press_releases&#038;p=63974"},"modified":"2026-01-28T12:17:12","modified_gmt":"2026-01-28T17:17:12","slug":"nursing-home-staffing-rule-repeal","status":"publish","type":"press_releases","link":"https:\/\/www.ufcw.org\/press-releases\/nursing-home-staffing-rule-repeal\/","title":{"rendered":"UFCW Decries White House\u2019s Repeal of Nursing Home Staffing Rule"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"tw-max-w-217 tw-m-auto tw-px-6 rich-text contained-block\" data-module=\"paragraph\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>WASHINGTON \u2013&nbsp;<\/strong>Today, the&nbsp;<strong><u><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ufcw.org\/about\">United Food and Commercial Workers International Union (UFCW)<\/a><\/u><\/strong>, which represents 1.2 million essential workers across North America, including nursing home, assisted living, and health care industry workers, released a statement in response to the Trump administration\u2019s decision to repeal President Biden\u2019s nursing home staffing rule and a report by the&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/01\/27\/us\/politics\/after-donations-trump-administration-revoked-rule-requiring-more-nursing-home-staff.html\">New York Times<\/a>&nbsp;that revealed political donations made by the nursing home industry.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"tw-max-w-217 tw-m-auto tw-px-6 rich-text contained-block\" data-module=\"paragraph\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>UFCW International President Milton Jones\u00a0said:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"tw-max-w-217 tw-m-auto tw-px-6 rich-text contained-block\" data-module=\"quote\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><div class=\"tw-max-w-217 tw-m-auto tw-px-6 rich-text contained-block\" data-module=\"paragraph\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe nursing home staffing rule was a win-win for workers and patients alike. Patients&#8217; needs can be addressed sooner and workers can have consistent schedules that allow them to take home more money for their families. This rule&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/ldi.upenn.edu\/our-work\/research-updates\/nursing-homes-owe-more-to-their-residents\/\">could have saved<\/a>&nbsp;13,000 lives every year with more workers on the job to care for patients and residents, but instead, the Trump administration revoked it.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"tw-max-w-217 tw-m-auto tw-px-6 rich-text contained-block\" data-module=\"paragraph\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOur members know that understaffing in this industry is not due to a lack of workers, but rather the industry\u2019s insistence in putting profit over patient care. Quite simply, nursing home executives saw this rule as a threat to their pockets, no matter how many lives it would save.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"tw-max-w-217 tw-m-auto tw-px-6 rich-text contained-block\" data-module=\"paragraph\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNow, it seems the well-being of patients and workers can be compromised for a few million dollars in political donations and private meetings with the Trump administration.
