On Feb. 25, members of UFCW Local 400 who work at three Politics and Prose bookstores in Washington, D.C., ratified a new contract.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n

\n

The three-year agreement covers approximately 70 booksellers and baristas and includes:<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n

\n
    \n
  • Guaranteed wage increases each year of the agreement.<\/li>\n<\/div>\n\n
    \n
  • Protections against \u201cclopening shifts.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/div>\n\n
    \n
  • Retention language to promote from within before accepting external candidates.<\/li>\n<\/div>\n\n
    \n
  • Bereavement pay.<\/li>\n<\/div>\n\n
    \n
  • An additional holiday.<\/li>\n<\/div>\n\n
    \n
  • Recall language in the event of layoffs.<\/li>\n<\/div>\n\n
    \n
  • The ability to appoint more shop stewards.<\/li>\n<\/div>\n\n
    \n
  • A \u201cDignity and Respect\u201d clause.<\/li>\n<\/div><\/ul>\n<\/div>\n\n

And a special thanks to our hard-working bargaining committee for their time and effort getting this across the finish line.
