This legislation would require that federal agencies establish delivery guardrails for retailers participating in the online SNAP delivery program.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"tw-max-w-217 tw-m-auto tw-px-6 rich-text contained-block\" data-module=\"paragraph\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>UFCW International President Milton Jones said:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"tw-max-w-217 tw-m-auto tw-px-6 rich-text contained-block\" data-module=\"quote\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><div class=\"tw-max-w-217 tw-m-auto tw-px-6 rich-text contained-block\" data-module=\"paragraph\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe are proud to endorse the Food and Nutrition Delivery Safety Act. This crucial legislation would ensure that delivery workers within the SNAP delivery program are fairly compensated and have the tools and training necessary to do their jobs.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"tw-max-w-217 tw-m-auto tw-px-6 rich-text contained-block\" data-module=\"paragraph\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDelivery workers, whether in-store UFCW members or workers who are part of the gig economy, play a critical role in ensuring that the nearly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ers.usda.gov\/topics\/food-nutrition-assistance\/supplemental-nutrition-assistance-program-snap\/key-statistics-and-research\">42 million monthly SNAP recipients<\/a> have food on their tables. Failing to enact these guardrails and compensate them justly sends a dangerous message about how essential workers are valued in this country. We applaud Sen. Fetterman (D-PA) and Rep. Figures (D-AL) for their leadership on this issue.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"tw-max-w-217 tw-m-auto tw-px-6 rich-text contained-block\" data-module=\"paragraph\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>BACKGROUND<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"tw-max-w-217 tw-m-auto tw-px-6 rich-text contained-block\" data-module=\"list\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><div class=\"tw-max-w-217 tw-m-auto tw-px-6 rich-text contained-block\" data-module=\"list-item\">\n<li>Online grocery shopping, including among SNAP beneficiaries, has skyrocketed in popularity over the past several years, prompting the need for updated regulatory legislation that reflects this evolution.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/div><\/ul>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"tw-max-w-217 tw-m-auto tw-px-6 rich-text contained-block\" data-module=\"list\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><div class=\"tw-max-w-217 tw-m-auto tw-px-6 rich-text contained-block\" data-module=\"list-item\">\n<li>If enacted, this legislation would update the <a href=\"https:\/\/snaped.fns.usda.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/documents\/Food%20And%20Nutrition%20Act%20Of%202008.pdf\">Food and Nutrition Act<\/a> to require that federal agencies establish strong protections for both in-store and independent contractor, \u201cgig,\u201d delivery workers.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/div><\/ul>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"tw-max-w-217 tw-m-auto tw-px-6 rich-text contained-block\" data-module=\"list\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><div class=\"tw-max-w-217 tw-m-auto tw-px-6 rich-text contained-block\" data-module=\"list-item\">\n<li>Qualified SNAP-eligible retailers would be required to pay delivery workers no less than minimum wage, receive employer-provided health and safety training and be given appropriate food safety equipment, with compliance monitored by U.S. Department of Agriculture\u2019s Food and Nutrition Service.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/div><\/ul>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"tw-max-w-217 tw-m-auto tw-px-6 rich-text contained-block\" data-module=\"list\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><div class=\"tw-max-w-217 tw-m-auto tw-px-6 rich-text contained-block\" data-module=\"list-item\">\n<li>Non-compliance would result in retailers losing their authorization to participate in the SNAP online delivery program, with the ability to reapply once they have shown they are following standards and are ensuring a safe and equitable workplace for delivery drivers.<\/li>\n<\/div><\/ul>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"tw-max-w-217 tw-m-auto tw-px-6 rich-text contained-block\" data-module=\"paragraph\">\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\">###<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"tw-max-w-217 tw-m-auto tw-px-6 rich-text contained-block\" data-module=\"paragraph\">\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\"><em>The UFCW International is the largest private sector union in the United States, representing 1.2 million workers and their families in grocery, meatpacking, food processing, healthcare, cannabis, retail, and other essential industries.
