New details from the bargaining table in Chicago reveal the extent of REI\u2019s bad faith bargaining. REI failed to offer a single proposal until the final day of bargaining, and failed to send its own Vice President of Labor Relations, or any key decisionmaker, to the table. REI\u2019s outlandish, bad faith proposals included:<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"tw-max-w-217 tw-m-auto tw-px-6 rich-text contained-block\" data-module=\"list\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><div class=\"tw-max-w-217 tw-m-auto tw-px-6 rich-text contained-block\" data-module=\"list-item\">\n<li><strong>Moratorium on the REI Union\u2019s organizing activity<\/strong>: The REI Union could not support workers at other REI stores hoping to unionize for the duration of the contract.<\/li>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"tw-max-w-217 tw-m-auto tw-px-6 rich-text contained-block\" data-module=\"list-item\">\n<li><strong>Non-disparagement agreement:<\/strong>\u00a0This would prevent REI Union members from speaking up about working conditions or anything that could be perceived as negative about the co-op, effectively silencing them.<\/li>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"tw-max-w-217 tw-m-auto tw-px-6 rich-text contained-block\" data-module=\"list-item\">\n<li><strong>Mandatory $1 million annual donation:<\/strong>\u00a0Each year, the REI Union would be required to give an outsized donation to REI\u2019s charitable organization of choice.<\/li>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"tw-max-w-217 tw-m-auto tw-px-6 rich-text contained-block\" data-module=\"list-item\">\n<li><strong>Six-year contract term:<\/strong>\u00a0This is double the length of previous contract terms that had been discussed.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/div><\/ul>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"tw-max-w-217 tw-m-auto tw-px-6 rich-text contained-block\" data-module=\"paragraph\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Alex Pollitt, a REI worker at the co-op\u2019s Bellingham store, and bargaining committee member,<\/strong>&nbsp;said:&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"tw-max-w-217 tw-m-auto tw-px-6 rich-text contained-block\" data-module=\"paragraph\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMy co-workers and I have spent the last four years showing up at the bargaining table for a fair contract, while REI has spent that time attempting to defeat us at every turn. We\u2019re calling for a nationwide boycott of REI\u2019s Anniversary Sale because REI still refuses to take negotiations seriously and has left us with no other way to make our voices heard.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"tw-max-w-217 tw-m-auto tw-px-6 rich-text contained-block\" data-module=\"paragraph\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOur singular goal for the past four years has been to negotiate in good faith with REI and agree on a contract that upholds the values and legacy of this co-op. We have continued to reach out after bargaining ended last month. REI has the ability to pick up the phone and get serious.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"tw-max-w-217 tw-m-auto tw-px-6 rich-text contained-block\" data-module=\"paragraph\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>REI\u2019s Anniversary Sale occurs every May and is the retailer\u2019s largest event of the year. Contact&nbsp;<\/strong><strong><a href=\"mailto:press@ufcw.org\"><u>press@ufcw.org<\/u><\/a><\/strong><strong>&nbsp;to arrange interviews with REI Union workers.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"tw-max-w-217 tw-m-auto tw-px-6 rich-text contained-block\" data-module=\"separator\">\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"tw-max-w-217 tw-m-auto tw-px-6 rich-text contained-block\" data-module=\"paragraph\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>BACKGROUND<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"tw-max-w-217 tw-m-auto tw-px-6 rich-text contained-block\" data-module=\"list\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><div class=\"tw-max-w-217 tw-m-auto tw-px-6 rich-text contained-block\" data-module=\"list-item\">\n<li>In previous negotiations in late February, REI proposed paying workers at unionized stores less than workers at non-union REI stores. REI\u2019s bad faith bargaining demonstrates that the company fundamentally opposes its workers\u2019 right to organize and form a union.<\/li>\n<\/div><\/ul>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"tw-max-w-217 tw-m-auto tw-px-6 rich-text contained-block\" data-module=\"paragraph\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"tw-max-w-217 tw-m-auto tw-px-6 rich-text contained-block\" data-module=\"list\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><div class=\"tw-max-w-217 tw-m-auto tw-px-6 rich-text contained-block\" data-module=\"list-item\">\n<li>The REI Union has a broad coalition of support for the boycott, which is unsurprising given the overwhelming solidarity displayed by members over the last several years, especially during the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ufcw.org\/press-releases\/rei-members-reject-corporate-backed-candidates-in-historic-board-election\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><u>\u201cVote No\u201d<\/u><\/a>\u00a0board campaign last year. After two union-backed candidates were prohibited candidacy in REI&#8217;s 2025 Board of Directors elections, the REI Union sent over 115,000 members to the company\u2019s website to vote down the candidates.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/div><\/ul>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"tw-max-w-217 tw-m-auto tw-px-6 rich-text contained-block\" data-module=\"list\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><div class=\"tw-max-w-217 tw-m-auto tw-px-6 rich-text contained-block\" data-module=\"list-item\">\n<li>Since the first REI store unionized in SoHo, N.Y., in 2022, the REI Co-op has engaged in a scorched-earth union-busting campaign both in-store and at the bargaining table, complete with the intimidation of workers, lies about unionization, and the termination of many vocal union supporters. In response, workers have held several\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rwdsu.org\/news\/rei-soho-a-sale-strike\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><u>multi-day walkouts<\/u><\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ufcw.org\/press-releases\/durham-rei-workers-community-leaders-take-part-in-rei-worker-day-of-action\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><u>community<\/u><\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rwdsu.org\/news\/rei-chicago-a-sale-strike-2024\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><u>co-op<\/u><\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rwdsu.org\/news\/rei-workers-coopted-board-meeting\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><u>member actions<\/u><\/a>, garnered support from\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rwdsu.org\/news\/rei-cleveland-a-sale-2024\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><u>elected officials<\/u><\/a>\u00a0from\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rwdsu.org\/news\/rei-workers-hike-to-hq\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><u>across<\/u><\/a>\u00a0the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rwdsu.org\/news\/rei-chicago-labor-day-strike-2024\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><u>country<\/u><\/a>, and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ufcw.org\/press-releases\/rei-workers-take-coordinated-action-in-response-to-unlawful-unilateral-changes-to-working-conditions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><u>more<\/u><\/a>.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/div><\/ul>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"tw-max-w-217 tw-m-auto tw-px-6 rich-text contained-block\" data-module=\"list\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><div class=\"tw-max-w-217 tw-m-auto tw-px-6 rich-text contained-block\" data-module=\"list-item\">\n<li>In July 2025, REI and the union\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ufcw.org\/press-releases\/ufcw-rwdsu-and-rei-co-op-reach-agreement-that-outlines-a-new-path-forward-for-contract-negotiations\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><u>agreed<\/u><\/a>\u00a0to establish a national bargaining structure to reach collective bargaining agreements for the 11 unionized REI stores. As part of the agreement, REI provided wage increases and bonuses for the years 2022-2025 that the company previously withheld from workers at represented stores.<\/li>\n<\/div><\/ul>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"tw-max-w-217 tw-m-auto tw-px-6 rich-text contained-block\" data-module=\"list\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><div class=\"tw-max-w-217 tw-m-auto tw-px-6 rich-text contained-block\" data-module=\"list-item\">\n<li>As negotiations were taking place, REI unilaterally changed the bylaws of its board to allow the co-op to appoint unelected directors for a period of three years, whereas previously, directors had to be elected by co-op members. This was a clear attempt to stifle the voices of co-op members and stakeholders.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/div><\/ul>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"tw-max-w-217 tw-m-auto tw-px-6 rich-text contained-block\" data-module=\"list\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><div class=\"tw-max-w-217 tw-m-auto tw-px-6 rich-text contained-block\" data-module=\"list-item\">\n<li>REI workers unionized for fair pay, sustainable scheduling practices, and better working conditions.
