Instead, this bill overlooks the needs of hardworking Americans and paves the way for more families to go hungry.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"tw-max-w-217 tw-m-auto tw-px-6 rich-text contained-block\" data-module=\"paragraph\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cJust as the House version proposed, this bill upholds plans to slash the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and encourages replacing good union jobs with contract jobs. Americans, including the hundreds of thousands of food workers represented by the UFCW, deserve better than that.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"tw-max-w-217 tw-m-auto tw-px-6 rich-text contained-block\" data-module=\"paragraph\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cCongress must return to the bipartisan approach that has guided previous Farm Bills. Any lawmaker serious about lowering food costs for families, improving standards for workers along the food supply chain, and strengthening rural communities must reject this bill and work across the aisle to strengthen it.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"tw-max-w-217 tw-m-auto tw-px-6 rich-text contained-block\" data-module=\"paragraph\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>BACKGROUND<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"tw-max-w-217 tw-m-auto tw-px-6 rich-text contained-block\" data-module=\"list\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><div class=\"tw-max-w-217 tw-m-auto tw-px-6 rich-text contained-block\" data-module=\"list-item\">\n<li>Senate Republicans\u2019 proposed Farm Bill closely mirrors the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/119th-congress\/house-bill\/7567\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><u>Farm, Food, and National Security Act of 2026 (Farm Bill)<\/u><\/a>\u00a0passed by the U.S. House of Representatives in April of this year, which the UFCW\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ufcw.org\/press-releases\/ufcw-urging-no-vote-on-farm-bill-in-house-agriculture-committee\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><u>vocally opposed<\/u><\/a>, urging lawmakers to vote \u2018No\u2019 during the bill\u2019s markup. The UFCW later\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ufcw.org\/press-releases\/farm-bill-fails-to-deliver-relief-for-working-families-and-lacks-protections-for-food-workers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><u>criticized<\/u><\/a>\u00a0the bill\u2019s passage in the chamber for failing to deliver relief for working families and excluding protections for food workers.<\/li>\n<\/div><\/ul>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"tw-max-w-217 tw-m-auto tw-px-6 rich-text contained-block\" data-module=\"list\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><div class=\"tw-max-w-217 tw-m-auto tw-px-6 rich-text contained-block\" data-module=\"list-item\">\n<li>The newly proposed legislation maintains a provision from Republicans\u2019\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/119th-congress\/house-bill\/1\/text\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><u>One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA)<\/u><\/a>\u00a0that shifts SNAP funding responsibilities to the states, which will slash benefits for the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ers.usda.gov\/topics\/food-nutrition-assistance\/supplemental-nutrition-assistance-program-snap\/key-statistics-and-research\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><u>42 million<\/u><\/a>\u00a0Americans who rely on the program every year. The proposal also encourages states to replace trained union employees with contractors, which would lead to job losses across the country.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/div><\/ul>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"tw-max-w-217 tw-m-auto tw-px-6 rich-text contained-block\" data-module=\"list\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><div class=\"tw-max-w-217 tw-m-auto tw-px-6 rich-text contained-block\" data-module=\"list-item\">\n<li>Members of Congress interested in addressing the rising cost of groceries and supporting food workers should instead support the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ufcw.org\/press-releases\/ban-surveillance-pricing-on-groceries\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><u>Stop Price Gouging in Grocery Stores Act<\/u><\/a>, which would ban surveillance pricing and electronic shelf labels in grocery stores, and the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ufcw.org\/press-releases\/ufcw-supports-food-secure-strikers-act\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><u>Food Secure Strikes Act<\/u><\/a>, which would allow striking workers and their households to receive SNAP benefits.
