{"id":66345,"date":"2026-09-17T08:42:06","date_gmt":"2026-09-17T12:42:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ufcw.org\/?post_type=press_releases&#038;p=66345"},"modified":"2026-09-17T08:42:07","modified_gmt":"2026-09-17T12:42:07","slug":"ufcw-decries-passage-of-deeply-flawed-farm-bill-in-senate-agriculture-committee","status":"publish","type":"press_releases","link":"https:\/\/www.ufcw.org\/press-releases\/ufcw-decries-passage-of-deeply-flawed-farm-bill-in-senate-agriculture-committee\/","title":{"rendered":"UFCW Decries Passage of Deeply Flawed Farm Bill in Senate Agriculture Committee"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"tw-max-w-217 tw-m-auto tw-px-6 rich-text contained-block\" data-module=\"paragraph\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>WASHINGTON, D.C. \u2013 <\/strong>Today, the <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ufcw.org\/about\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><u>United Food and Commercial Workers International Union (UFCW)<\/u><\/a><\/strong>, which represents 1.2 million essential workers across North America, released a statement in response to the Senate Agriculture Committee\u2019s passage of the Senate version of the Farm Bill.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"tw-max-w-217 tw-m-auto tw-px-6 rich-text contained-block\" data-module=\"paragraph\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>UFCW International President Milton Jones <\/strong>said:<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"tw-max-w-217 tw-m-auto tw-px-6 rich-text contained-block\" data-module=\"quote\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><div class=\"tw-max-w-217 tw-m-auto tw-px-6 rich-text contained-block\" data-module=\"paragraph\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe Farm Bill that advanced today bows to powerful agricultural interests and leaves hardworking families out to dry. Amid a nationwide affordability crisis, 5 million Americans have lost SNAP benefits, including 1.5 million children, and there is no relief in sight. Instead, the future cuts to food assistance will be even deeper.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"tw-max-w-217 tw-m-auto tw-px-6 rich-text contained-block\" data-module=\"paragraph\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe bill also does nothing to protect the safety of workers across the food supply chain, support union jobs, or strengthen rural communities. The Senate Agriculture Committee had an opportunity to go back to the drawing board after failing to pass this legislation last month, but they turned down that chance.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"tw-max-w-217 tw-m-auto tw-px-6 rich-text contained-block\" data-module=\"paragraph\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis Farm Bill fails on key issues for UFCW members, their families, and their communities. We urge lawmakers to reject it.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"tw-max-w-217 tw-m-auto tw-px-6 rich-text contained-block\" data-module=\"paragraph\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>BACKGROUND<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"tw-max-w-217 tw-m-auto tw-px-6 rich-text contained-block\" data-module=\"list\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><div class=\"tw-max-w-217 tw-m-auto tw-px-6 rich-text contained-block\" data-module=\"list-item\">\n<li>The UFCW has vocally <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ufcw.org\/press-releases\/ufcw-decries-senate-republicans-farm-bill-proposal-for-failure-to-protect-hardworking-families\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><u>opposed<\/u><\/a> every <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ufcw.org\/press-releases\/ufcw-urging-no-vote-on-farm-bill-in-house-agriculture-committee\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><u>iteration<\/u><\/a> of this bill that has been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ufcw.org\/press-releases\/farm-bill-fails-to-deliver-relief-for-working-families-and-lacks-protections-for-food-workers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><u>proposed<\/u><\/a> this legislative session for failing to deliver relief for working families and excluding protections for food workers.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/div><\/ul>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"tw-max-w-217 tw-m-auto tw-px-6 rich-text contained-block\" data-module=\"list\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><div class=\"tw-max-w-217 tw-m-auto tw-px-6 rich-text contained-block\" data-module=\"list-item\">\n<li>While this bill includes a delay to the drastic SNAP cuts under H.R. 1, the so-called \u201cOne Big Beautiful Bill,\u201d it offsets the delay with even deeper cuts in the future and fails to propose a solution for the roughly <a href=\"https:\/\/fna-bwbufwdzbabpezgc.z01.azurefd.us\/sites\/default\/files\/resource-files\/snap-persons-7.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><u>40 million<\/u><\/a> Americans who rely on the program every year. Since H.R. 1\u2019s implementation, more than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbpp.org\/research\/food-assistance\/snap-tracker-people-are-losing-food-assistance-as-the-republican-megabill\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><u>4.5 million<\/u><\/a> Americans have lost access to SNAP, more than <a href=\"https:\/\/fna-bwbufwdzbabpezgc.z01.azurefd.us\/sites\/default\/files\/resource-files\/snap-persons-7.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><u>1.5 million<\/u><\/a> of whom are children.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/div><\/ul>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"tw-max-w-217 tw-m-auto tw-px-6 rich-text contained-block\" data-module=\"list\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><div class=\"tw-max-w-217 tw-m-auto tw-px-6 rich-text contained-block\" data-module=\"list-item\">\n<li>Members of Congress interested in addressing the rising cost of groceries and supporting food workers should instead support the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ufcw.org\/press-releases\/ban-surveillance-pricing-on-groceries\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><u>Stop Price Gouging in Grocery Stores Act<\/u><\/a>, which would ban surveillance pricing and electronic shelf labels in grocery stores, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ufcw.org\/press-releases\/ufcw-supports-food-secure-strikers-act\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><u>Food Secure Strikes Act<\/u><\/a>, which would allow striking workers and their households to receive SNAP benefits.
